Federal Stafford Student Loan (S)

NGS is proud to offer, to those students who qualify, the Federal Stafford Loan Program for the DBA, MS and BS Degree Completion Programs.  The loans are comprised of two portions for which students must qualify:

Subsidized:  Maximum award $8,500 for the DBA and MS and $5,500 for BS Degree Completion Program – the government pays the interest on the loan while you are in school and six months after you graduate.  The Department of Education will no longer be offering Subsidized loans to graduate students as of July 1, 2012.  Subsidized loans will be available for disbursement to DBA and MS students until June 30, 2012.  Subsidized loans will continue to be offered to BS Degree Completion Program students with a limit of $5,500.

Unsubsidized:  Maximum award $12,000 for the DBA and MS and $7,000 for BS Degree Completion Program – interest accrues on the loan while you are in school.  The maximum unsubsidized award for DBA and MS students will be $20,500 as of July 1, 2012.  The maximum unsubsidized award for BS Degree Completion Program students will continue at $7,000.

The DBA and the MS loan programs are at a fixed interest rate of 6.80%.  These loans have a maximum award of $20,500 per year to Graduate students.  Expected amount of debt upon graduation for a DBA student after the two year program is approximately $42,736.81 with interest calculated on the unsubsidized portion ($24,000 @ 6.8%) for students borrowing the full amount of the loan of ($20,500) per year for two years.   Expected amount of debt upon graduation for a MS student after the one year program is approximately $20,946.58 with interest calculated on the unsubsidized portion ($12,000 @ 6.8%) for students borrowing the full amount of the loan of ($20,500) for the one year program.

The unsubsidized portion of the BS Degree Completion Program is at a fixed interest rate of 6.80%.   The subsidized portion of the BS Degree Completion Program is at a fixed interest rate of 3.40% for academic year 2011-2012.  Beginning July 1, 2012, the subsidized and the unsubsidized loans will be at a fixed interest rate of 6.8%.  The undergraduate loans have a maximum award limit of $12,500 per year for the BS Degree Completion Program students.  Expected amount of debt upon graduation for a BS Degree Completion Program student after the one year program is approximately $12,760.51 with interest calculated on the unsubsidized portion ($7,000 @ 6.8%) for students borrowing the full amount of the loan of ($12,500) for the one year program.

The Federal Stafford Loan Program has a 10-year repayment plan and the educational loan interest is considered to be tax deductible.  Students receiving federal loan money are responsible for the terms and conditions of the loan.  NGS will notify the lender when a student ceases to make satisfactory progress, when there is a change to less than half time enrollment, or when a student withdraws from the program.

Tuition Assistance for Government and Military Personnel

The Armed Forces Tuition Assistance (TA) Program is a benefit paid to eligible members of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Congress has given each service the ability to pay up to 100% for the Tuition Expenses of its members. Each branch of the Service has its own criteria for eligibility, obligated service, application process and restrictions. This money is usually paid directly to the institution by the individual service. Although the program is one year length, military students typically are eligible for up to two fiscal years of reimbursement.

Additionally, active duty members may elect to use the MGIB “Top-Up” in addition to their service provided TA to cover high cost courses.

TA is not a loan; it should be seen as money you have earned just like your base pay! When combined with a Stafford Loan, you could start the graduate program with no out-of-pocket expenses. Call to talk to a Financial Aid Officer today.

Interested students should meet with their local Education Service Officer to determine their benefit. In some cases job training funds may be applied. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain the appropriate tuition assistance forms and send them to the Bursar’s office:

Ms. Mary Orlando, Bursar
The National Graduate School
500 Victory Road, 2nd Floor
North Quincy, MA 02171
Phone: (800) 838-2580
Fax: (617) 847-6316

The Bursar’s Office will invoice the government once the approved TA form is submitted. The student is responsible for submitting his/her grades to their education office.

Veteran’s Benefits

Under the Post 9/11 and if eligible the Montgomery GI Bill, (MGIB) the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, United States Coast Guard their reserves and the National Guard provides up to 36 months of educational benefits to eligible veterans.

The student must apply and complete the enrollment form. Once accepted, the VA will physically mail to the student their Certificate of Eligibility (CoE). The student then submits their CoE to the Bursar’s Office for processing. A VA Certification Form is completed by the NGS certifying official for authorized sites.

If you are receiving Tuition Assistance from your branch of service, you may be eligible to use MGIB to supplement or “Top-Up” your tuition assistance. For more information, call 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) or log in to the GI Bill Website.

Tuition Reimbursement/Company Sponsorship/Vouchers

NGS staff understands the corporate tuition reimbursement process and can easily work with your employee benefit plan. Typically, NGS invoices the employer directly. If employed by a company, contact your Human Resources Department regarding funds available for degree and certificate candidates. NGS will accept company vouchers and bill companies directly to minimize out of pocket expenses. Students must submit a letter from their company guaranteeing payment before the first course. Students whose company pays by pre-approved voucher must submit that voucher prior to registration. Otherwise, students are expected to make payment to the School and then be reimbursed by their company.

Tuition Scholarships for Spouses of Enrolled DoD/DHS Students

Spouses of enrolled Department of Defense / Department of Homeland Security students receive the same discounted tuition rate as their enrolled spouses. It’s fun going to school together! Apply Now!
