Overview

The National Graduate School (NGS) Special Blackbelt Program is a custom program that offers NGS Masters program graduates the opportunity to build on their education to become fully certified NGS Blackbelts.  The most often asked question is: How are NGS Blackbelts different from NGS Masters program graduates? NGS Blackbelts are trained to find and fix problems in a more direct and tactical manner.  First, they start by working on the right problem.  Second, they find the failure modes, variation by following process data and information. Finally, they develop and deploy Improvement Plans that apply the best tools to fix the problems and sustain performance gains.

NGS Blackbelts learn how to use and apply Lean, Lean, Six Sigma, and other process improvement and continuous improvement tools to find and minimize the effects of not only the failure modes causing variation in processes but also the root causes driving them. The Special Blackbelt Program credits lessons learned in The NGS Masters program, supplements and builds on other lessons and introduces new concepts and tools used by Blackbelts.

Detailed information regarding the NGS Blackbelt programs can be found at: www.ngs.edu/blackbelt

Projects

Similar to the Masters Business Project (MBP) system, competent and confident application of the Blackbelt tools and methods is validated through a project applied in the workplace. Students are certified as full NGS Blackbelts once the project is reviewed and accepted by the lead Blackbelt instructor at a final report out and defense of the project with the process owners and project champions. The project may be a new one or may build on the MBP project from the Masters program.
